The major problem of this study is to elucidate the Struggle for Getting Freedom in Frank Darabont’s the Shawshank Redemption Movie: An Individual Psychological Approach. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the character of Andy Dufrane based on individual psychological perspective. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the date are based on primary data the Shawshank redemption movie it self. While secondary data are Shawshank Redemption’s biography and other data which deal with the research. In analyzing the data, she applies two approaches. Firstly, structural approach is used to analyze the elements of the movie. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, and theme. Secondly, the individual psychological approach is used for analyzing the struggle for getting freedom and optimism of Andy Dufrane that influences his daily activity and behavior toward life. These approaches are applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and answer the problems. The writer finds that Andy Dufrane crawls his way to freedom through a sewage pipe. He wants to get country freedom.

AMIR’S PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT IN KHALED HOSSEINI’S THE KITE RUNNER (2004): A PSYCHOSOCIAL APPROACH

This study concerns with the novel entitled The Kite Runner which is written by Khaled Hosseini. The analysis of this research paper is focused on the major character, “Amir”, based on structural elements and psychosocial approach. In doing this research, the writer uses psychosocial theory by Erik Homburger Erikson. It is a theory which analyzes personality development related to internal and social factors. This theory indicated by eight stages which every stage has own specific development that frames individual with a crisis that must be faced. The objective of this research is to analyze the personality development of main character “Amir” in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. By recognizing Erikson’s theory, the reader will be brought to understand the personality development. From the analysis, the writer gets conclusion that Amir’s personality development is influenced by two factors, internal and external. Internal means the crisis he faced in stages form from infancy periode to adulthood periode, external factors means family, ethnic and culture, gender and intimacy. Amir is able to pass the psychosocial stages pretty well. Although he fails the stages in childhood period it does not make him fail in the next stages. From infancy periode, childhood, young age until adult the outcome of Amir’s personality development are : trust, autonomy, guilty, inferior, identity, intimacy, and generativity. In other hand, the external factors which mostly influenced Amir’s personality development come from family, it is his father, Baba.
