MATERIAL ORIENTATION IN SHAKESPEARE’S KINGLEAR (1606): A MARXIST PERSPECTIVE

The object of the study is the drama script of King Lear play written by William Shakespeare. The study is to reveal how material orientation is reflected in King Lear written by Shakespeare in 1606. The objective of the study is to analyze the structural elements in the play and to analyze the material orientation of the play based on Marxist perspective. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as a type of the research. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the dialogues, statements, and actions of the King Lear drama script and the secondary data source is biography of character. The method of collecting data is note taking. The technique of analyzing data is descriptive. The result of the study is as follows. Firstly, based on the structural analysis, Shakespeare delivers a moral message that one’s action is usually motivated by material orientation and the structural elements are related each other and form a unity. Secondly, based on the Marxist perspective, Shakespeare reflects the social condition of Elizabethan people who tended to emphasize the material orientation
